Mandeni Municipality held the Annual Bursary and Matric Awards for the matriculants of 2016. The awards were held on Tuesday, 31 January 2017 at the Sibusiswe Community Hall to honour the top achieving matriculants and schools, as well as most improved schools within Mandeni.
Mandeni Municipality Mayor Cllr, Sphesihle Zulu congratulated the matriculants for their success and wished them well as they embark on their tertiary education. Mayor Zulu also stated that all deserving beneficiaries were selected according to their academic achievements and every matriculant within the Mandeni Municipality had an opportunity to apply for the bursaries.
His worship the Mayor went on to say that the bursary scheme is geared towards assisting the young people of Mandeni who come from financially disadvantaged homes to realize their dreams. “The Municipality recognized the loss of skills, talent and potential because families could not afford to pay for their children’s education, the Municipality carefully chose the recipient based on their families income,” said the Mayor.
He went on to say that without education the economic freedom we aim to achieve in our lifetime will only be a dream, therefore we must arm our young people with an education, “With education we can conquer the enemy called poverty, especially for black South Africans whom have been financially oppressed,” he said. Mayor Zulu concluded that education will also provide new entrepreneurs who will contribute towards moving Mandeni forward.
Municipal and government stakeholders attended the awards ceremony which included a representative from the Departments of Education Mr T Nxaba, Mandeni Deputy Mayor Cllr Phindile Sishi, Municipal Speaker Makhosazana Zungu, Maphumulo Municipality Speaker Cllr Simphiwe Shange and Mandeni Municipality ward councilors.
